I’ve played around with the limited beta and the final app, and it’s pretty easy to use. (Epic says anyone who uploads a scan from RealityScan to Sketchfab gets a free year of Sketchfab Pro.) From Sketchfab, you can bring the model into apps like Epic’s own Unreal Engine. You can also preview your scan directly in the app to see how it will look before exporting it to Sketchfab, a 3D model sharing platform. As you walk around and photograph the object, RealityScan helpfully shows each image you captured in augmented reality, as well as a heatmap where the object needs more coverage. To “scan” an object in the app, take a few photos of it from as many angles as possible. The app could be a handy tool to recreate objects from the world around you without having to create them yourself from scratch. Epic Games’ RealityScan app, which lets you scan real-world objects and turn them into 3D models for video games or other projects, is now officially available as a free download for iOS after initially launching a limited beta in April.
